Damn Right Food Workers are Essential - They Deserve a Living Wage and a Safe Workplace

"No grapes!" When it came to showing solidarity with Caesar Chavez and the striking grape-workers, my mom brooked no dissent - especially not from a whining 9 year-old. "Find some other kind of fruit. I'll never be a scab!"

I'm probably not the only one reminiscing about mom this Mother's Day. My heart goes out to everyone who's lost a mom, whether now due to the coronavirus pandemic, or in years past for whatever reason. But in times like these, it's good to reflect on the values our moms installed in us, and how they continue to inspire us today.

My mom was always a radical firebrand when it came to workers and their rights. Her father was a labor organizer in Brooklyn in the 1950s, and she built on that spirit of progressive politics by co-founding an agrarian commune in West Virginia in the early 1970s.

The Velobar project is in many ways a tribute to my mom's legacy. When I was creating the recipes, I could always hear her voice in the back of my head: No junk food! Only buy organic! She was also a great lover of dark chocolate...and of course, no stranger to cannabinoids! But more than anything else, she was a fighter. She never relented in her struggle to make the world a better place by advocating for social, racial, and economic justice.

As the world continues to come to grips with the current health crisis, one of the things I'm struck by is how we've been forced to re-evaluate the jobs and workers that truly are "essential." No disrespect to professional athletes and movie stars making millions of dollars, but right now, I think the folks growing and processing our food are a lot more "essential" than they are. Which is why it galls me so deeply that many food workers are toiling away for low wages in unsafe working conditions - in their own words, essentially being treated like slaves.

Velobar is my own way to carry on my mom's legacy, to try and make the world even just a little bit better. One of the things putting a new product out into the world lets you do is get up on a soapbox and try to get people's attention. So for what it's worth, the soapbox I'd like to get up on today is the #fightfor15 movement. If you haven't done so already, please consider going to their website and signing a petition to protect workers' rights.

And of course...we wouldn't be Velobar if we didn't put our money where our mouth is! To show our support for workers who truly are essential, we've been running a 50% OFF promotion for health workers, food workers, and workers in the CBD and medical marijuana industries. If you're a worker in one of these essential industries, you deserve a break! Relax and take 50% off your order of any Velobar product with the discount code CBDISESSENTIAL50.

I think my mom would say that's the least we could do.
