Damn Right Velobars are Made with Sustainable Plant-Based Superfoods...Here's Why
You're managing work, family, school, and social life through a global freaking pandemic. So your go-to snack better be made with clean, environmentally-friendly ingredients, and it better chill you the hell out.
We started Velobar in 2016 as a healthy cannabis edible for medical marijuana patients in Oregon. Our reasoning at the time was - if you're seeking wellness from plant-based medicine, why not boost that natural medicine with natural plant-based superfoods?
Nowadays, we could all use a little plant-based medicine. And we'd all prefer to get that medicine from healthy plant-based ingredients, grown in a sustainable way. That's what Velobar is all about - delivering the wellness of CBD, combined with the robust physical sustenance of protein-rich superfoods.
So what exactly are the amazing superfoods that Velobars are made of? Forgive us if we wax rhapsodic...our horn of plant-based plenty runneth over.
ORGANIC HEMP HEARTS
The hemp plant is where everything starts. Cannibidiol, aka CBD, the world's chillest molecule, is extracted primarily from the mature flower of the hemp plant. If you've read this far you're probably already pretty familiar with CBD, but if not, here's a good article from a trusted source (Harvard University) to get you started.
But even aside from CBD, the rest of the plant has so many other uses! Hemp pith and fiber from the stalks can be used to make everything from paper and rope to fabric and hempcrete. But the hulled seeds of the hemp plant are even more exciting - at least to food nerds like us. The organic hemp hearts we use in Velobars are an astounding 35% protein by weight. And, hemp protein contains all 10 essential amino acids, making it a phenomenal plant-based protein source. What hemp does not contain are phytates, which are found in many vegetarian protein sources and can interfere with the absorption of essential minerals.
In addition to protein, hemp is a rich source of many other essential nutrients, including iron, phosphorus, potassium, zinc, folate, and magnesium. All of these minerals are crucial to human health, but magnesium in particular is a key element of a healthy diet that is often overlooked. Magnesium deficiency — which is especially prevalent in older populations — is linked to insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, coronary heart disease, and osteoporosis.
Hemp seeds also contain "healthy fat" alpha-linolenic acids, as well as phytosterols, which help reduce the amount of cholesterol in the body by unclogging fatty build-ups in the arteries.
Not to mention - hemp seeds have a mild, nutty, earthy flavor that harmonizes quite well with the other Velobar super-ingredients in a delicious, nourishing way.
So what are those other Velobar super-ingredients? Well, it depends on which flavor you chose...
ROASTED NUTS, DARK CHOCOLATE AND SEA SALT
Heart healthy almonds are high in healthy monounsaturated fats, fiber, protein and antioxidants. They may help lower risk factors for heart disease by reducing LDL (“bad cholesterol”) levels in the blood.
Cashews are often linked to cancer prevention, weight management, and maintaining a strong immune system. They also contain high levels of lutein and zeaxanthin, two compounds that make eyes happier by protecting against light damage.
Pumpkin seeds are rich in antioxidants and packed with a wide range of nutrients including high levels of magnesium. Healthy magnesium levels are important for regulating blood pressure, heart health, bone health and blood sugar levels.
Sunflower seeds are a vitamin and mineral powerhouse. They’re a super source of vitamin E (about 75% in one serving), and are rich in copper, thiamin, phosphorous, manganese, and selenium.
Flaxseeds are high in fiber and heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids, as well as phytochemicals called lignans. One tablespoon of ground flaxseed contains 2 grams of polyunsaturated fatty acids (including the omega 3s), 2 grams of dietary fiber, and only 37 calories.
Originally cultivated as a food source as early as 3500 BC in Mexico and Guatemala, chia seeds are an excellent source of heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids, as well as containing a wealth of antioxidants, fiber, iron, and calcium.
Dark chocolate is one of the best (and most delicious!) sources of antioxidants on the planet. Studies have shown a drastic reduction in the risk of heart disease among people who eat dark chocolate regularly. The flavanols from cocoa also increase brain function by improving blood flow and may protect skin from sun damage.
In addition to the Hemp Hearts, Pumpkin Seeds, Flax Meal, Sunflower Seeds, Chia Seeds listed above, our Peanut Butter flavor also has...Peanuts! Let us not forget all the amazing health benefits the humble peanut has to offer, including protein, heart-healthy fats, essential vitamins and minerals, and fiber. Not to mention their great taste, anti-aging qualities, and cholesterol-reducing phytosterols.
