The hemp plant is where everything starts. Cannibidiol, aka CBD, the world's chillest molecule, is extracted primarily from the mature flower of the hemp plant. But even aside from CBD, the rest of the plant has so many other uses! Hemp pith and fiber from the stalks can be used to make everything from paper and rope to fabric and hempcrete. But the hulled seeds of the hemp plant are even more exciting - at least to food nerds like us. The organic hemp hearts we use in Velobars are an astounding 35% protein by weight. And, hemp protein contains all 10 essential amino acids, making it a phenomenal plant-based protein source. What hemp does not contain are phytates, which are found in many vegetarian protein sources and can interfere with the absorption of essential minerals.
In addition to protein, hemp is a rich source of many other essential nutrients, including iron, phosphorus, potassium, zinc, folate, and magnesium. All of these minerals are crucial to human health, but magnesium in particular is a key element of a healthy diet that is often overlooked. Originally cultivated as a food source as early as 3500 BC in Mexico and Guatemala, chia seeds are an excellent source of heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids, as well as containing a wealth of antioxidants, fiber, iron, and calcium.
Dark chocolate is one of the best (and most delicious!) sources of antioxidants on the planet. Studies have shown a drastic reduction in the risk of heart disease among people who eat dark chocolate regularly.
